I believe there is a problem with modern leadership ideas and culture [Hot Take]

I believe there is a serious problem with the modern idea of “leadership” when it is measured against the biblical doctrine of “rule”. In much contemporary usage, leadership is treated as influence, vision, charisma, team-building, and the ability to move people toward a desired goal. While none of those things are necessarily evil in themselves, they are too thin to carry the moral weight Scripture places on authority. The Bible does not begin with leadership as influence; it begins with God’s rule and with delegated authority under Him. Human beings are called to exercise dominion, stewardship, oversight, shepherding, judgment, protection, and service within the spheres God has assigned to them. Biblical rule is not self-created influence but God-given responsibility.

The danger of modern leadership language is that it can detach authority from righteousness. A man may be persuasive, visionary, popular, strategic, and effective, yet still fail to rule well before God. Scripture does not judge rulers merely by their ability to gather followers, get likes, or produce results. It judges them by faithfulness, justice, humility, courage, truth, service, and care for those entrusted to them. A wicked king may be an effective leader in the modern sense, but he remains a wicked ruler before God.

This is especially important in the church. The New Testament does not primarily call pastors to be CEOs, platform-builders, vision-casters, or organizational influencers. It calls them to be shepherds, overseers, teachers, examples, and stewards of the mysteries of God. They must feed the flock, guard the doctrine, protect the sheep, rebuke error, model holiness, and give an account to Christ, the Chief Shepherd. Leadership language can be useful if it is subordinated to these biblical categories, but it becomes dangerous when it replaces them.

Leadership is measured by followers. Rule is measured by faithfulness. Leadership is measured by results. Rule is measured by influence. Coercive leadership, whether benign or overt, is not the same as persuasive influence from a ruler who rules well.

Therefore, my concern is not that Christians should reject all forms of influence, organization, or direction. Godly rulers must lead well. But the modern concept of leadership often begins in the wrong place. It begins with man’s capacity to influence rather than God’s authority to assign responsibility. Biblical rule is thicker, stronger, and more accountable. It is authority under God, exercised in righteousness, for the good of those entrusted to one’s care.
