I believe Jesus spent three days in the grave because the burial of Christ is not a secondary detail in the Christian faith, but an essential part of the gospel itself. Scripture does not merely say that Jesus died and rose again; it also emphasizes that He was buried. Paul summarizes the gospel by saying that “Christ died for our sins,” “that he was buried,” and “that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3–4). The burial of Jesus confirms the reality of His death. He did not merely faint, appear to die, or experience a symbolic death. His body was taken down from the cross, wrapped, and laid in a tomb. The grave testifies that the Son of God truly entered into death on behalf of sinners.

The three days in the grave also fulfilled the words of Jesus Himself. He pointed to the prophet Jonah as a sign, saying that just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so the Son of Man would be in the heart of the earth. This means that Christ’s burial was not an accident of history, but part of God’s appointed plan. His death, burial, and resurrection unfolded according to divine purpose and biblical prophecy. The grave became the place where the reality of His humiliation was displayed. The eternal Son, who took on true humanity, submitted Himself not only to suffering and crucifixion, but also to burial. He entered the lowest condition of human existence, identifying fully with those He came to redeem.

At the same time, the three days in the grave show that death could not finally hold Him. Jesus entered the tomb as the crucified Savior, but He did not remain there as a defeated victim. His body saw no corruption, and on the third day He rose in victory over sin, Satan, and death. The grave was real, but it was temporary. It served as a witness both to the certainty of His death and to the glory of His resurrection. Christianity depends on this truth. If Christ did not truly die, then He did not truly rise. If He did not rise, then faith is empty and sinners remain in their sins. But because Jesus died, was buried, and rose again on the third day, believers have confidence that sin has been paid for, death has been conquered, and resurrection life has been secured.

Therefore, to confess that Jesus spent three days in the grave is to confess the fullness of the gospel. It means that Christ truly bore the penalty of sin, truly entered death, and truly emerged victorious. The tomb was not the end of His mission, but the dark doorway through which He passed into resurrection glory. His time in the grave assures believers that the work of redemption was complete, that death has lost its final power, and that all who belong to Christ will one day share in His resurrection.
