I Believe Christ Will Return Personally, Bodily, and Triumphantly
The Christian faith is not merely about what God has done in the past or what He is doing in the present. It is also about what He has promised to do in the future. From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible points toward the day when Jesus Christ will return to complete His work of redemption, judge the living and the dead, and establish His everlasting kingdom.
I believe Jesus Christ will return personally, bodily, visibly, and triumphantly. His second coming is not a symbolic idea, a spiritual awakening, or a metaphor for the triumph of good over evil. It is a real, historical event that will forever change the course of human history. Just as Christ literally came into the world at His first advent, He will literally return at His second.
The promise of Christ's return was given by Jesus Himself. On the night before His crucifixion, He comforted His disciples by saying, "I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also" (John 14:3). After His ascension, the angels declared to the disciples, "This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw Him go into heaven" (Acts 1:11). The New Testament repeatedly calls believers to live in eager anticipation of that glorious day.
The return of Christ is the blessed hope of every Christian. Our hope is not ultimately found in political stability, economic prosperity, technological advancement, or human progress. While we are grateful for God's common grace in the world, we recognize that no earthly solution can permanently overcome sin, death, or evil. Our hope rests in the certainty that the risen Lord Jesus will return to make all things new.
When Christ returns, He will come personally. The same Jesus who was born in Bethlehem, who walked the roads of Galilee, who died on the cross, and who rose from the grave will return in glory. Christianity is rooted in the historical person of Jesus Christ, and our future hope centers on His literal return.
He will also return bodily. After His resurrection, Jesus was not merely a spirit or an idea. He possessed a glorified physical body. He ate with His disciples, invited Thomas to touch His wounds, and ascended bodily into heaven. In the same way, He will return bodily as the victorious King. The incarnation did not end with Christ's ascension. He remains fully God and fully man forever.
His return will also be visible. Scripture teaches that every eye will see Him. There will be no uncertainty, no secret revelation known only to a select few. The King of kings will return in unmistakable glory. What began with humility in a Bethlehem stable will culminate with majesty beyond human imagination. The One who was once mocked, rejected, and crucified will be openly acknowledged as Lord by every person who has ever lived.
Christ's return will also be triumphant. His first coming was marked by humility. He came as the suffering Servant to bear the sins of His people. His second coming will reveal Him as the conquering King. Every enemy will be defeated. Satan will be judged. Death itself will be destroyed. Sin will no longer corrupt God's creation, and every promise of God will reach its complete fulfillment.
The return of Christ also includes a final judgment. Scripture teaches that every person will stand before the Lord to give an account. Those who have trusted in Jesus Christ will be welcomed into eternal life, not because of their own righteousness but because they have been clothed in Christ's righteousness. Those who have rejected the gospel will face God's just judgment for their sins. This reality should fill believers with both reverence and urgency. Eternity is real, and every person will spend it either in the joyful presence of God or under His righteous judgment.
For believers, however, the return of Christ is not something to fear but something to eagerly anticipate. It marks the completion of our salvation. Every struggle against sin will finally end. Every tear will be wiped away. Every disease will be healed. Every injustice will be made right. We will see our Savior face to face and dwell with Him forever in the new heavens and the new earth.
The certainty of Christ's return should also shape how we live today. Jesus repeatedly called His followers to remain watchful, faithful, and prepared. The expectation of His coming motivates holy living, faithful service, joyful endurance, and steadfast hope. Knowing that Christ could return at any time encourages believers to invest their lives in what has eternal value rather than becoming consumed with temporary pursuits.
At the same time, Christians should approach the study of future events with humility. Faithful believers have held different views regarding the precise order and timing of prophetic events. While these discussions have value, our unity is not found in agreement over every detail of biblical prophecy. Our unity rests in the certainty that Jesus Christ will return exactly as God has promised. The central truth is not the timing of His coming but the certainty of His coming.
As a pastor, I want the return of Christ to produce hope rather than speculation. It is easy to become distracted by endless predictions, sensational headlines, or attempts to identify dates and fulfillments that Scripture itself does not reveal. Jesus plainly taught that no one knows the day or the hour of His return. Rather than attempting to predict His coming, believers are called to faithfully serve Him until He comes.
One day the trumpet will sound, the dead in Christ will be raised, and the Lord Himself will descend in glory. Faith will become sight. The church will be gathered to her Bridegroom, and the kingdoms of this world will become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ. On that day every promise of Scripture will stand vindicated, and every believer will rejoice in the presence of the Savior who loved us and gave Himself for us.
For these reasons, I believe Jesus Christ will return personally, bodily, visibly, and triumphantly. His coming is the believer's blessed hope, the culmination of God's redemptive plan, and the assurance that righteousness will ultimately prevail. Until that glorious day, I desire to live faithfully, preach His gospel boldly, and encourage others with the promise that our King is coming again. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
